The assassination on 28 June 1914 of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria is believed to have triggered the conflict greatly. On the other hand, WWII lasted from 1939 to 1945. This war begun on 1 September 1939, when Germany invaded Slovakia and Poland, leading to declaration of war on Germany by France and most of the countries of the Bitish Empire and Commonwealth. Looking at the two wars, different weapons were employed and the sophistication of these weapons differed greatly. In the WWI, no much of sophisticated weapons were used but when we look at the weapons used in the WWII, weapons of mass destruction were put into use. The bombing of Nagasaki in the WWII confirms how such weapons were used in the second world war as opposed to guns, which were the main weapons employed in WWI ( Perry,2008) The regions covered by the two wars also differed in areas or regions that were involved. The World War II affected most parts of the world including Africa which was not involved during the WWI. Many countries formed up and collaborated to fight the other grouping. These affiliations made WWII to be more complex as opposed to WWI. In terms of fatalities, WWII is considered to be the deadliest with estimates of over 40 million to 70 million fatalities. Since it involved most of the worlds regions, it led to many fatalities as well as injuries. All weapons that were in existence during that period were put into use and countries, more so the superpowers wanted to show their might. Similarities of WWI and WWII Both wars resulted in massive loss and fatalities of human population. Due to the use of weapons in the fight, a number of peoplle died as well as many being left with permanent injuries where they had to live with their condition for the rest of their life. War has never brought many benefits more so in terms of resources. During the both wars, countries directed most of their resources to buying and making weapons. This led to foregoing other expansion of the countrys infrastructure and other developments, thereby making countries poorer after the war. It is only USA that benefited financially from the war but countries like japan was negatively affected by the war. Both wars involved the whole world whereby both armies and citizens were involved in the fight. The human and economic resources of the countries were mostly geared towards the war. Both wars led to mushrooming of bodies that advocated for better ways of dealing with conflict. Considering the number of fatalities during the two wars, some people felt there should be better ways of handling conflicts rather than rushing in war without looking at the repercussions. In a nutshell, WWI and WWII led to many fatalities and delayed economic development in many countries. The Nagasaki bombing led to adverse effects that are felt up to date and this confirms that other methods of conflicts resolution should be employed rather than rushing into a war without looking at the end results. Mary Ann Bickerdyke, Calico Colonel of the Civil War Mary Ann Bickerdyke was known for her nursing service during Civil War, including setting up hospitals, winning confidence of generals. She lived fromà July 19, 1817 to November 8, 1901. She was known as Mother Bickerdyke or the Calico Colonel, and her full name wasà Mary Ann Ball Bickerdyke. Mary Ann Bickerdyke Biography Mary Ann Ball was born in 1817 in Ohio.à Her father, Hiram Ball, and mother, Anne Rodgers Ball, were farmers.à Anne Balls mother had been married before and brought children to her marriage to Hiram Ball. Anne died when Mary Ann Ball was only a year old,. Mary Ann was sent with her sister and her motherââ¬â¢s older two children to live with their maternal grandparents, also in Ohio, while her father remarried.à When the grandparents died, an uncle, Henry Rodgers, cared for the children for a time. We donââ¬â¢t know much about Mary Annââ¬â¢s early years.à Some sources claim she attended Oberlin College and was part of the Underground Railroad, but thereââ¬â¢s no historical evidence for those events. Marriage Mary Ann Ball married Robert Bickerdyke in April 1847. The couple lived in Cincinnati, where Mary Ann may have helped with nursing during the 1849 cholera epidemic.à They had two sons. à Robert struggled with ill health as they moved to Iowa and then to Galesburg, Illinois. He died in 1859. à Now widowed, Mary Ann Bickerdyke then had to work to support herself and her children. She worked in domestic service and did some work as a nurse. She was part of the Congregational Church in Galesburg where the minister was Edward Beecher, son of the famous minister Lyman Beecher, and a brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe and Catherine Beecher, half-brother of Isabella Beecher Hooker.à Civil War Service When the Civil War began in 1861, the Rev. Beecher called attention to the sad state of soldiers who were stationed in Cairo, Illinois.à Mary Ann Bickerdyke decided to take action, probably based on her experience in nursing.à à She put her sons under the care of others, then went to Cairo with medical supplies that had been donated.à On arrival in Cairo, she took charge of sanitary conditions and nursing at the encampment, though women were not supposed to be there without prior permission.à When a hospital building was finally constructed, she was appointed matron. After her success in Cairo, though still without any formal permission to do her work, she went with Mary Safford, who had also been at Cairo, to follow the army as it moved south.à She nursed the wounded and sick among the soldiers at the battle of Shiloh. Elizabeth Porter, representing the Sanitary Commission, was impressed by Bickerdykeââ¬â¢s work, and arranged for an appointment as a ââ¬Å"Sanitary field agent.â⬠This position also brought in a monthly fee. General Ulysses S Grant developed a trust for Bickerdyke, and saw to it that she had a pass to be in the camps.à She followed Grantââ¬â¢s army to Corinth, Memphis, then to Vicksburg, nursing at each battle. Accompanying Sherman At Vicksburg, Bickerdyke decided to join the army of William Tecumsah Sherman as it began a march south, first to Chattanooga, then on Shermanââ¬â¢s infamous march through Georgia.à Sherman allowed Elizabeth Porter and Mary Ann Bickerdyke to accompany the army, but when the army reached Atlanta, Sherman sent Bickerdyke back to the north. Sherman recalled Bickerdyke, who had gone to New York, when his army moved towards Savannah.à He arranged for her passage back to the front.à On her way back to Shermanââ¬â¢s army, Bickerdyke stopped for a while to help with Union prisoners whoââ¬â¢d been recently released from the Confederate prisoner of war camp at Andersonville.à She finally connected back with Sherman and his men in North Carolina. Bickerdyke remained in her volunteer post ââ¬â though with some recognition from the Sanitary Commission ââ¬â until the very end of the war, in 1866, staying as long as there were soldiers still stationed. After the Civil War Mary Ann Bickerdyke tried several jobs after leaving army service. She ran a hotel with her sons, but when she got sick, they sent her to San Francisco.à There she helped advocate for pensions for the veterans.à She was hired at the mint in San Francisco.à She also attended reunions of the Grand Army of the Republic, where her service was recognized and celebrated. Bickerdyke died in Kansas in 1901.à In 1906, the town of Galesburg, from which sheââ¬â¢d left to go to the war, honored her with a stature. While some of the nurses in the Civil War were organized by religious orders or under Dorothea Dixââ¬â¢ command, Mary Ann Bickerdyke represents another kind of nurse: a volunteer who was not responsible to any supervisor, and who often interjected themselves into camps where women were forbidden to go.

Mostly, generation Y and Z desire to have a flexible work schedule that implies them not being tied to the office a whole day. Eulogy for Father We are gathered here to give Dr. Jerome, my dad, a last formal farewell. We celebrate his life with the theme of "Choose Life". For throughout his life, dad consistently chose life. He has the God given virtue of seeing the possibility of life. In many circumstances when many are blind, he sees possibilities for more abundant life. His vision is so clear that it drives him to action. And he is a man of action. He always tells me that his actions are calculated risks. Only after his death have I come to understand what he means by calculated risk. I believe he weighs the possibilities for more abundant life against the personal risks that his actions might incur. For him, the possibilities for life always out-weigh the risks of personal loss or rejection. His vision gives him the desire and courage to act. When he saw the possibility of a greater life in relationship with another, he married my mother, Theresa, in 1938. His vision was correct and resulted in a fruitful life-long relationship that brought forth 5 children. When he discovered that I suffered from asthma, he chose a better live for me by becoming a pediatrician. The result was not only a better life for me but also for his many patients. In 1947, he saw the possibilities for life in the West. So he came over to study in St. Louis. His father, my grandfather, was blind to the possibilities and refused to send him here. But his mother, my grandmother, sold some of her jewelry to pay for his stay here. In 1949, when the Communists are moving to take over the country, he saw the risks to our lives and come back to get us out. For him the risk of Communism was greater than the uncertainties of immigration. We left one week after the Communists captured Shanghai, with expired passports, and on the only ship to visit Shanghai that year. If dad was only one day late, our lives would have been radically different. When he saw that teenagers needed a special kind of medical care, he left his practice here in order to study at Harvard's adolescent unit. He was the first doctor in St. Louis to practice adolescent medicine. He also authored a book on the subject. Later in life, with considerable personal sacrifice, he chose to fight for the life of the unborn, for medical ethics that protected the aged and infirm, for an end to capital punishment, and for other related causes.

Mary Shelley in her novel ââ¬Å"Frankensteinâ⬠studies a problem of human nature, comparing thoughts and actions of two main characters. The plot of a story is devoted to the creation of a new human and alienation of it by society. A question of the relationship between the creator and his work was tried to solve not only scientists but also science fiction writers. According to the authorââ¬â¢s intention, Victor goes from the euphoria of God to hominal primitivism in relation to the monster he made. As a ââ¬Å"fatherâ⬠, he must show much more compassion and patience than ordinary people. The litterateur showed an image of a newborn who came to the world with aid of science and technological progress. Like any child, he does not possess any knowledge and draws all the skills from surrounding world. His upbringing is a matter of time. Instead of help, the protagonist chooses to ignore and to avoid responsibility. Frankenstein feels so unfair attitude and responds in the same coin, refusing promises he has given. In fact, we are talking about retribution of the abandoned child. The motives of an inventor can be explained by his initial disappointment, which he experienced at the sight of the finished ââ¬Å"productâ⬠. A creature was not as beautiful as in his fantasies and deprived him of the desire for further experiments. It was the obsession with knowledge prevented Victor from foreseeing the consequences of his insane fanaticism. His revolutionary nature brought not helping but only suffering to the family. In this context, our hero is an active tool in the hands of science. Intellect serves not as the blessing of heaven, but as a real curse that spawned a murderer. A dominant reason for the hatred is rejecting appearance of Frankenstein. Focusing on such a primitive criterion, individuals did not seek to get acquainted with him, much less to close communication. Such ostracism leads to despair and rejection of people. Perhaps the murder of immediate family members played a symbolic role. Frankenstein wanted Victor to feel how hard it was to be devoid of love and to remain alone. Not only does birth determine the character of a person, but also his/her environment. If Victor showed sincere participation in ââ¬Å"his offspringâ⬠, and did not perceive it as a plague, events would unfold in a different way. But he is just a person who quickly lights up with ambition and retreats just as fast. Thus, Mary Shelleyââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Frankensteinâ⬠does not lose its relevance in our time. Modern technology allows you to create artificial persons. An attitude toward such a perspective ranges from a complete aversion of similar future to absolute support. Probably, the writer tried to warn that some phenomena are better left untouched.

The Role of a Writing Coach The Role of a Writing Coach The Role of a Writing Coach By Mark Nichol Do you have a desire to write, but perhaps you find yourself frustrated by an inability to develop or organize your writing, or perhaps youââ¬â¢re getting bogged down in the process? Maybe a writing coach can help you. This post discusses what a writing coach can do for you. What is a writing coach? He or she does not necessarily edit your work, though the writing coach may also be an editor (and/or a writer) by trade. He or she is not a ghostwriter. A writing coach is a guide, and in most other endeavors, the best point in a journey to hire a guide is at or near the beginning, although youââ¬â¢re likely to benefit from a writing coachââ¬â¢s assistance starting at any stage of the writing process. The relationship between a writing coach and a writer generally begins with a face-to-face or phone interview in which the writing coach asks the writer about the project, what the writer hopes to accomplish with it, and whatââ¬â¢s holding the writer back. A writing coach then helps the writer organize his or her project, determine a schedule, and select a completion date as a goal. The writing coach discusses the stages of a writing project, including an initial outline, preliminary research, a revised outline, more extensive research (and, if necessary, interviews), another revised outline, and various drafts, followed by the editorial process (developmental or substantive editing, copyediting, and proofreading). A writing coach helps the writer develop a clear and compelling premise or plot, determine a tone, style, and voice based on the intended audience, and produce a coherent, captivating narrative, whether fiction or nonfiction. A writing coach can help a professional share expertise, a business owner sell a product, an academic report on research, or a student complete an application or course essay. He or she will benefit poets, short story writers, and novelists, as well as authors of nonfiction works, including articles, reports, and book manuscripts. A writing coach helps elicit the writerââ¬â¢s experience and expertise, guides the writer to develop a creative, productive spatial and temporal environment, and trains the writer to craft effective prose. He or she helps the writer find the heart of the content, what works and what needs work, how to carry out research and conduct interviews, and how to frame and organize the material (and what to include and what to leave out). A writing coach helps the writer focus, provides an objective perspective, and guides and encourages. A writing coach is like a personal trainer for a writer. A writing coach is a mentor. Writing coaches are likely to charge writers more per hour for their services, but their role is ultimately less costly than that of a developmental editor or copy editor, or even a proofreader. A writer may consult with a writing coach for only a few hours in all, but even if this stage in the writing process takes longer, it is probably well worth the expense youââ¬â¢re virtually guaranteed to benefit from the relationship, and to get that much closer to completion of the project and eventual publication.
